What theme (if any) should I have for a ball?

So the End of Year Ball is coming up, and it's down to (mainly me) to organise it. Including decorations and themes for dressing (if there is any). I was just thinking black tie formal and do something ritz-y for the decorations, but I really don't have an eye for it. Give me inspiration!
